Film negatives have a vinegar smell

If your film negatives smell like vinegar this is a sure sign they are deteriorating. It's time to digitize or take other steps to preserve the physical media and any valuable content contained on them. When film is ending its shelf life, it starts eating itself with the chemicals that were origionally used to create it. Newer ways of developing film doesn't run into this problem as much because they use different mediums and processes, but older film is very suspetable to this problem. If you have film that was created 30-40 years ago, it's time to check it for deterioration.
